When a global pandemic struck our community, the Lexington Chapter rose to the challenge.

The Lexington Chapter can be proud that we stepped up and made a difference. Led by Chapter Regent Judy Owens, at least 1482 masks and other protective gear were made by our chapter members and friends. Masks, ear savers and head coverings were distributed to many organizations, including University of Kentucky Medical Center, UK Children's Hospital, Markey Cancer Center, Central Baptist Hospital, the VA at Leestown Road, YMCA, at least three nursing homes plus countless store clerks, mail carriers and others. Members also responded to a call to assist school children of migrant workers in the Bowling Green area.

“Each mask that I bagged and distributed included a card honoring the DAR member who sewed the mask, as well as one of her patriot ancestors,” Judy said. Masks with pockets had washable filtering material included, along with care instructions.

Even more importantly, the mask-making project led to a long series of other community-based initiatives, grounding our chapter more deeply into the issues of our community.
